These are the complete rules for games in Mafia, Murders, and Madness. You don’t have to read this page unless there is confusion about a specific rule and clarification is needed.
If the specific description of a role contradicts any of these rules in any way, that description gets priority unless the narrator says otherwise. The narrator has the power to override any of these rules at any time. The word of the narrator is final.
The list of roles is located on this site. Any information given by the narrator about a specific role for a specific game overrides anything written under any role on the website.
Town wins when all neutral killing roles and mafia are dead.
The town may still win if neutral evil roles are alive, unless a neutral evil role meets their win condition first.
Mafia wins when:
There are more mafia-aligned players than other players alive
All non-mafia roles with the capability to kill in any way other than by voting to lynch are dead
Any other roles that have the capability of taking away the number of mafia-aligned players (such as a cult leader) are dead
The win condition of every neutral role is specified on the website.
A neutral evil role is defined as a role which typically does not have the capability to kill, and is neutral. Each neutral evil role has their own win condition.
A neutral killing role is a role which must kill everyone else who opposes them. This excludes roles that do not need them to die, such as a Pirate who has already met their win condition.
A neutral chaos role is a neutral role who aims to cause chaos and may win with the first team to win after the neutral chaos role has reached their objective.
A neutral benign role is a neutral role who has the ability to win with any faction and typically is able to maintain complete neutrality.
The day phase lasts for 24 hours, or until more than half of the players have voted for a single person or every single living player has voted, unless there are any actions that may be performed in the day, in which case the day will not be ended early until 12 hours after its beginning. At the end of the day phase, whatever player has the most votes is lynched. If there is a tie, no one is lynched. If there are no votes, no one is lynched. Votes that are not for players in the game and eligible to receive votes are ignored.
During the night phase, people may do their night actions by stating their action in their submissions channel (or the mafia channel or other extra channel, if applicable). If you do not do your action, no action will be done (except if for some reason an action is required for a specific role, in which case it will be randomized). Narrators will no longer randomize actions that are not completed.
All kills must be accompanied by a valid reason (not based on randomness or any prior information or feelings). Players are also strongly encouraged to have valid reasons for lynches too, but these are not required to be stated for every lynch. In most cases, if you don’t have a valid reason for a kill, you may ask the narrator to randomize it for you.
On night 1, if a power role has an action that targets another player (e.g. mafia kill, cop, doctor, etc.), and if the player wants to use it on night 1, it will be randomized by the narrator. This applies to ALL actions on night one.
Actions will be resolved in the following order, from earliest to latest:
Action Failure
Ultimate Defense
Ultimate Attack
Roleblocks
Transportation
Powerful Defense
Powerful Attack
Misc. neutral PR abilities
Misc. mafia PR abilities
Misc. town PR abilities
Basic Defense
Basic Attack
End-of-Night Effects*
The type of attack and defense a role gives or has will be specified on the website.
Non-Misc. Categories: If there is a situation where there is a tie in any of these categories, actions by neutral roles will be resolved first, followed by mafia roles, followed by town roles. If there is still a tie, both actions will take place, if sensible. In a very unlikely case where this still does not work, the narrator will decide what to do.
Misc. Categories: In a case where two actions of the same alignment are in conflict, actions that modify or affect other actions will be resolved before the actions that they modify or affect. In a very unlikely case where this still does not work, the narrator will decide what to do.
*End-of-Night Effects are effects such as Plaguebearer infections, Amnesiac choices, Douser douses, and Cult conversions that take effect at the start of the day.
The person who performs the mafia kill will be determined by the following list, starting from the top. If there is nobody in the top ranked position, the kill will be done by the next one on the list, and so on. If there are multiple of anyone in the same position on the list, the one who performs it will be randomized. The mafia team will not be informed which one is performing the kill if it is randomized.
Mafioso
Power role that is not performing another visiting action
Power role that is performing another visiting action
In a situation where an action fails, someone who will receive some kind of feedback or results will be told that their action failed.
Roles with limited uses will not have a use consumed if their action fails, but will not otherwise be informed.
Other roles whose action fails will not perform their action and will not be informed.
This only applies when it is explicitly stated in a role that an “action fails” in a certain condition.
Everyone who is roleblocked and performed a night action will be informed that they were roleblocked.
Uses of roles with limited uses are consumed if the action is not successfully completed, unless the user was roleblocked, unless otherwise stated.
Any role action where consecutive actions are not allowed may be performed on the subsequent night if on the original night the player was roleblocked, the action failed, etc.
